  • The idea was as simple as it was nebulous when the Blue Valley Board of Education dropped it on then-Superintendent Tom Trigg’s desk in the mid-2000s. While Blue Valley schools had consistently produced exemplary academic outcomes, members of the board saw a need to better connect the classroom experience of students with the ever-changing demands of the workplace.

    It’s 8:30 a.m. on a perfect October Thursday at Swickard Family Farm out at 191st Street and Mission Road in southern Johnson County. And while hundreds of their peers are trying to shake off the sleep in their first hour classes, a dozen Blue Valley area high schoolers make their way through the towering barn and out to the paddock, gathering in the bright green pasture glistening in the golden autumnal sunrise.

    Archana Sundar of Blue Valley Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) in Overland Park, KS was among the select students nominated to attend the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute Oct. 13-15, 2016, in Des Moines, Iowa, during the Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium, which drew 1,500 people from more than 60 countries to discuss the world’s hunger and food security issues. The World Food Prize was founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug to recognize and inspire great achievements in improving the quality, quantity and availability of food in the world.

    A team of four Blue Valley CAPS seniors – Kusalwin Kularatne and Jake Bjorseth from Blue Valley North, Josh Moore from Blue Valley High, and Josh Bethel from St. Thomas Aquinas - travelled to St. Louis, Mo. On Friday, October 21st to compete at GlobalHack VI. This competition, a technology challenge for students and professional coders, was held at the Chaifetz Arena on the St. Louis University campus. Upon arrival, the team would then have thirty-six hours to solve homelessness through computer programming.
