    CAPS Student Interns at Garmin

Kevin Carr, a BVNW Senior, is working as an intern at Garmin every weekday afternoon. Carr was enrolled in CAPS Technology Solutions course both semesters of his junior year. Garmin is expanding their internship program from college students to include qualified high school students.

“Kevin was a great candidate with technical skills comparable to college level interns,” said Mary Melton, College Relations Recruiter, at Garmin.

Kevin works in a small team environment with engineers who are developing new Personal Navigation Devices for cars and trucks. He is involved with unit testing, automating processes and fixing bugs. He wants to pursue a degree in computer science when he graduates high school.

“Having the opportunity to work at Garmin instead of attend classes is great experience as I’m assigned to real projects and making a contribution to the company,” said Carr.

“We are hoping to expand our high school intern program with more students who are interested in software engineering,” said Melton.

Students in the CAPS Technology Solutions course toured Garmin in the fall semester. Garmin, a CAPS business partner since 2008, also provides mentors and guest speakers to the CAPS program.
