Civil Engineering and Architecture

May 17
This week in Civil Engineering and Architecture we continued to work on our commercial project. We finished that up and dove immediately into the final exam on Tuesday. We all scored very well. On Wednesday we went over to Black & Veatch for Garrett Brown and Sam Brown to present their residential house too their client, Mark Aron. On Thursday and Friday we did surveying on the field behind the CAPS building.

This week in CEA we got to visit the Blue River waste water plant and the La Sycgne Power Plant. We learned about how both worked and got to take a tour of each as well. During our time at CAPS we went over Beam Deflection and worked on our Commericial Project. On Friday we finished up our Residential Project by presenting our Lake Homes to our clients.

This week in CEA, students took a tour of Black & Veatch and their heating and cooling system.  Also while on the tour, we looked at the fifth and sixth floor renovations.  We also have been learning about structural beams and how to determine loads.  Also, we’ve been putting the finishing touches on our Lake House presentations for next Friday.

The CEA students have been very busy the past two weeks. They have interviewed their clients for their lake house project and sent in their different sketches in for approval. This week they went on a tour of 360 Architecture in KCMO lead by architect Brian Berg. They were able to examine the workspace and get any questions answered. The CEA students also finished up their final floor plans for the project and submitted the design to their clients before spring break.

This week our class has been multitasking on a couple different assignments. Out of our residential book most if not all are finishing up our design houses. Prior to finishing the assignment in the book, we will begin activity on residential foundations.

This week in CEA we began Unit 2 Lesson 2, focusing on Cost and Efficiency Analysis. We discussed properties of various construction materials including pricing and thermal conductivity. We calculated costs of materials and the amount of heat lost and gained through different materials. We continued to work on the Revit software to construct a design of a home.

January 14
This week in CEA we got a brief introduction to the Civil Engineering and Architecture class and we started with Unit 1. We covered the history of civil engineering and architecture and why it exists to this day. We then underlined the basic principles and elements of design and how they are incorporated into a structures layout. We talked about how they make each building unique.

Once we covered that, we chose our own style of architecture and made a short presentation about it. We explained the origin and different features associated with that style.  On Friday we started sketching our models for a different selected style that we are going to make into a  3-D model.
