CAPS Teacher Ed students have been involved in several activities here at the end of this semester:
Instructor students and Internship students completed their last observations and partnerships in classrooms. Many found it hard to leave their mentor teachers and students!
- Ed Tech and Gaming students were filmed and interviewed by representatives from the Center for Digital Education with Converge Magazine about their game-creation process. Danielle Stoops and Alec Winsor traveled to Timber Creek Elementary school where they were filmed interacting with the elementary students playing their educational games
- Ed Tech and Gaming students have submitted their created games to Arcademics and BrainPOP for professional evaluation and have also entered their games in the STEM challenge
- Instructor and Ed Tech and Gaming students participated in our Avaya virtual classroom with their avatars and have written justifications for using such technology in classrooms
- Instructor and Ed Tech and Gaming students are working collaboratively with students from the KIPP Endeavor Academy in Kansas City. CAPS Teacher Ed students created “lessons” on Edmodo and worked with them virtually
- April 26-28, nine students accompanied Ms. Fry and Ms. Schuckman, gifted teacher at Timber Creek Elementary, to Orlando, Florida for the National Future Educators Association Conference. After submitting a proposal for presenting, these students were selected to present not one but two sessions at the conference for teachers and future educators that had approximately 800 + participants. Members of this presentation team are Tessa Farmer, Elizabeth Ragsdale, Danielle Stoops, Paige Cedergreen, Rosie Bergerhofer, Laura Gibbs, Ty Shafer, Logan Williams, and Tate Lancaster
- Instructor and Ed Tech and Gaming students will be doing “poster sessions” for their final projects, displaying artifacts of their learning for the semester. These sessions will be visited by administrators in the district as well as business professionals who will evaluate the student presentations
- Internship students will be interviewing for a “teaching position” for their final project. They will be interviewed by district and outside HR professionals
CAPS Teacher Ed students deserve accolades for their accomplishments this year in our program:

In addition, CAPS Teacher Ed students in the past two weeks have visited the KIPP Endeavor Academy Charter School and The Children’s Place in Kansas City, MO. This last week, students also participated in a Common Core workshop presented by Shelli DuPree and Barb McAleer of the BV school district.
Instructor and Ed Tech and Gaming students have been exploring our virtual classroom environment. This environment allows for real-time collaboration without physical proximity. CAPS is working with C-Point Consulting to evaluate the potential value of an innovative platform for collaboration and learning. AvayaLive Engage is an immersive 3D eLearning environment that leverages a gaming platform to enhance interactivity and engagement. CAPS is one of the first K12 institutions to initiate a pilot in the U.S. Students have logged in from various locations (even from home) to “attend” class and work on projects. We have pictures on our twitter account.
Internship students will be preparing themselves for mock job interviews for teaching and education related positions, and Instructor and Ed Tech and Gaming students will be preparing poster sessions for their final “exam” activities.
CAPS Teacher Ed students assisted in evaluating projects from the CIM class at CAPS. The students evaluated wooden puzzles created for the children market.
Converge magazine personnel will be here on April 30 and May 1 to create a video story about our program.

March 30
CAPS Teacher Education students have had a busy week after spring break!
Thanks to Nicole Carlson, McKenzie Mahring, and Tate Lancaster for skyping in to Ms. Fry’s presentation at the CoSN Conference in San Diego. The students were able to talk to conference participants about their experiences at CAPS and about their projections for the future of education.
Instructor students have been working on their physical and online portfolios and have been observing in their second classrooms. They will be shooting video of themselves teaching and will be creating a lesson plan to present to the classes.
All students have been working on research and are working with their resources, notes, and recordings in EverNote on their phones, laptops, iPads, tablets, and/or computers.
Ed Tech and Gaming students are now administrating a virtual classroom environment and preparing it for the “avatars” of other students. Danielle Stoops and Alec Winsor will serve as administrators with Ms. Fry to develop this environment and experiment with it as a tool for learning and instruction.
On Thursday, some of the CAPS Teacher Education students collaborated with students from the ACCESS House in a Yoga and dance exercise session. All of the students had fun, and the CAPS Teacher Education students are wanting to make it perhaps a monthly event.
Dr. Mark Turner from UMKC visited with the p.m. CAPS Teacher Education students about the education department at UMKC and also began preparing them for our visit to the KIPP school on April 5. All CAPS students will be attending that field trip during their CAPS session time.
On Thursday evening, March 28, CAPS was host to Baker School of Education students. Donna Deeds and CAPS Teacher Ed students provided tours and then collaborated with the students from Baker on the concept of profession-based learning.
March 8
CAPS Teacher Education students are working on projects, working in classroom, and collaborating with educational professionals. Projects include Human Systems Development, Access House, Heartland Hoops, Stylitics, National FEA Presentation Tea, and CAPS Teacher Ed Summer Camp Team.
Internship students are on the home stretch of their first semester partnerships, acting much like student teachers, creating lesson plans, attending meetings, shadowing students and actively “teaching” in the classrooms.
Instructor students are beginning their second semester observation. This last week, they have been refining resumes and reference lists and creating lesson plans. They presented their first lesson plans to their peers this week for feedback. During their second observation, they will be creating lesson plans in that classroom and will be taking a more active role there.
Ed Tech and Gaming students just finished piloting their created games in three elementary schools and will now be refining for submission to the STEM Challenge and to some educational gaming companies.
Ms. Fry, CAPS Teacher Education instructor, will be on the road. Friday, March 8, she will be presenting at the MACE Conference on the Kansas State University campus, and she will then travel to the CoSN conference next week in San Diego, CA where she is also a presenter. If possible with schedules, CAPS Teacher Ed students will be skyping in during both of these presentations to speak to the audience.

CAPS Teacher Ed students are working on projects with outside groups, research, and lesson plans for classrooms.
On Friday, March 1, CAPS Teacher Ed students will be hosting “future teacher” students from the Olathe school district. Pictured are students who are planning activities for that group.
Also pictured are students working on projects and preparing for our presentation for the National Future Educators Association conference in Orlando, FL in April. Students will be doing two presentations on mobile learning and 21st century teaching.
Kudos to Danielle Stoops and Alec Winsor who have spent time in Blue Valley Elementary schools piloting the games they created in their Educational Technology and Gaming course. They are receiving student feedback and will be submitting their games to the STEM Challenge Competition.
2020 Instructor students just finished observation #1 and are getting ready for observation #2. They are currently revising resumes and references and will be presenting a lesson plan to their classmates next week. Internship students are completing week 4 of their first semester partnerships.
